- January 9th Double Feature. Family Havdalah Program (Open to all!! Young and old!) 5:30 pm 6:30 pm Family Film (Adults and parents with children 7 and up who can read subtitles well) TBA 8:00 pm The Syrian Bride An Israeli woman marries a Syrian television star, painfully realizing that once she crosses the border between Israel and Syria, she will never be able to return to her family. - January 23rd 7:30 pm The Lemon Tree Salma Zidane (Abbass) is a Palestinian widow living on the edge of the West Bank, eking out a living from a small lemon grove on her property that abuts the fence marking the Israeli border on one side. When the Israeli defense minister moves into the house across the fence, the secret service claims the lemon grove is a threat to the minister’s safety and orders Salma to cut it down. Under the silent, sympathetic eye of the minister’s wife Mira (Rona Lipaz-Michael), Salma defies the authorities, sneaking into the shuttered grove to water and care for the trees while mounting a legal challenge with the help of attorney Ziad Daud (Ali Suliman), who is drawn to her quiet strength. As Mira’s marriage falls apart and Salma struggles to maintain control of both her land and her confusing feelings for the young lawyer, the two women form an unspoken bond from across opposite sides of the fence—a bond that may lead to an unlikely solution. - February 6th 7:30 pm Waltz with Bashir One night at a bar, an old friend tells director Ari about a recurring nightmare in which he is chased by 26 vicious dogs. Every night, the same number of beasts. The two men conclude that there's a connection to their Israeli Army mission in the first Lebanon War of the early eighties. Ari is surprised that he can't remember a thing anymore about that period of his life. Intrigued by this riddle, he decides to meet and interview old friends and comrades around the world. He needs to discover the truth about that time and about himself. As Ari delves deeper and deeper into the mystery, his memory begins to creep up in surreal images. March 10th Introduction to Sephardic Cooking: Serve Something New for Pesach with Lynn Kantor Lynn Kutner started cooking and baking at a very early age, under the direction of her master chef Russian grandmother. By the age of nine she was experimenting with all sorts of dishes, trying out variations on traditional family recipes. Lynn cooked all through her teen-age years. Then, after receiving a B.A. in philosophy, she started a small catering business in New York which in turn led to her job as the first culinary instructor at the New School, where she taught cooking and baking from 1974 to 2008. During her teaching career Lynn has continued catering and creating new recipes. She has been a restaurant and cookbook reviewer, has published two cookbooks of her own (Bountiful Bread and A Pocketful of Pies), and has appeared in numerous publications about food. She has also appeared on the Food Network and on ABC-TV. She and her husband have traveled extensively in France and Italy, where she has been a careful observer of culinary methods. Lynn brings cooking and baking to life with Continental flair and classic technique.
